                    Locals call it ‘Dodda Basavana Gudi,’ the oldest and biggest temple devoted to Nandi Bull, and that is why it is fondly known as ‘Nandi Temple.’ The abode of Lord Shiva, known as Kailashagiri, was guarded by the famous Nandi bull, who also served as a mount to Lord Shiva. Kempe Gowda built this Dravidian-style temple with a generous granite sculpture of a Bull carved out on a single rock that welcomes people at the entrance. The statue is 21 feet long and 15 feet high, originally grey-colored, but the devotees applied coconut oil, benne, and pure butter to make it black. The temple also hosts a small temple of Lord Ganesh, where the artistic statue of Lord Ganesh is made of 110 kilos of pure butter, which makes up for an intriguing sight to the visitors. Located inside a park known as Bugle Rock, this temple was built to appease a wild bull who used to destroy the peanuts cultivated in this region. The temple depicts the style of architecture associated with the Dravidian group and is touted as one of the oldest temples of Bangalore. Kempe Gowda, the ruler of the Vijayanagara empire, built it.

                    The entire structure of the Bull has been carved out from a single granite rock and is 6.5 meters long and 4.5 meters high. The original grey statue has turned black over time with the devotees' regular application of butter and coconut oil. It also houses one of the biggest Nandi temples in the whole world. The idol of Nandi is provided with a Shivalingam on its side, and the vimana is also beautifully adorned by the motifs of Shaivas. The temple also houses the idols of God Surya and Chandra on their respective chariots. The tower area over the shrine was constructed in the 20th century and is beautifully decorated by the motifs and figures of god.

 

Best Time to Visit: In the evening time aarti. For the blissful celebration of Kadalekai Parsihe, visit 'Karthik Maas' last Monday and Tuesday.
