Coorg Golf Links Coorg
Like-minded Mr. KK Ayyappa and the late Mr. C.S. Coorg Golf Links is a consequence of Nanjappa's vision to take golf in Coorg to a different level. Beautifully located amidst beautiful surroundings. In 1987, the then-Vissolidated Golf Grounds envisioned a golf course project at Polybetta. Golfers had the idea of a good golf course in Coorg. Beer sessions at the Bamboo Club were held throughout the day and into the evening about the rules of golf, player handicaps, and golf course starts. It took two years to realize this dream. Land acquisition and fundraising were huge tasks.
In 1990, luck struck
for the golfers, and they succeeded in finding and negotiating a 40-acre plot
in Bittangala. The late Brig originally owned the land. CB Ponappa also changed
hands twice. As the wetlands were neglected by non-Kerala landlords, there were
inherent problems of encroachment and trespassers.
The first half of the Coorg Golf Links is planned on plateaus and hills with tanks. Trees are planted in groups in strategic areas. The second half is planned on a plain area with tanks and trees on either side of the fairway. High hills surround Kozhikode. Nine holes were built in the early 1990s for Coorg Golf Links. The course attracted only the occasional golfer. Nocturnal visitors such as foxes howled in unison at dusk. Mr Ayyappan and his wife enjoyed a cup of tea on the verandah of the temporary clubhouse and watched the egrets in abundance. I wanted a good clubhouse. It is made of a hexagonal structure. Today, the clubhouse, bar, dining room, card room, new large office and guest rooms are very popular with members.
