Valayanad Devi Temple
The Valayanad Devi Temple was erected in the
14th century by the Zamorins, and this temple is one of the most favourite
sacred spots to be visited in Kozhikode. This wonder of 14th-century Dravidian
architecture stands apart from all other nearby temples. It is said that it was
due to the blessings of their family deity, Valayanad Vagabathi, that the
Zamorins emerged victorious over the powerful King Valluva Kolathiri. They
prayed and pleased the Goddess to come over and reside in their palace. The
Goddess consented, and the temple was built in her honour. The Devi is
worshipped and revered by all devotees. Idols of Shiva, Lord Ayyappa, and
Vighneswara are also worshipped in this temple. Kuruthy Tarpanam is one of the
important festivals that is conducted here.
