Bharathapuzha River
The river 'Nila' in Kerala, also known as the Bharathapuzha River, drains west and is the second longest river in the state. This river has remained a way of life in the southern parts of Malabar. To that effect, several names have been adopted, especially Nila, which purports to be a river, but chronicles from age-old Hindu writings speak about water bodies sustaining human beings. There are about 11 dams constructed throughout the river for irrigation. The river's use, however, extends beyond the peripheral regions. For example, the well-known Kerala Kalamandalam, situated on the banks of the river, acts as a riverine center for many art forms.
