Chain tree

Of the many sites in Wayanad, Chain Tree is the most underrated and least frequented, but it comes with an age-old history that possesses numerous fans from far and beyond. Chain tree is found on the national road by the Pepper Wayanad Gate Hotel. Chain tree refers to a huge Ficus tree with an enormous steel chain, surrounded by numerous myths and stories about its existence. Chain tree is one of the best Wayanad tourist attractions. The main story is related to a local tribal person called Karinthandan. The British murdered him after taking his help in finding the routes through the ghat. The wilderness was the dwelling place of tribal people, and there was no road to cross the forests, even during the British period. People believe that the soul of that tribal person is in the tree, which leads to accidents for many users who negotiate the hairpin curves. There's another version related to it, too, which narrates the killing of the Mahout, who took the British people to Wayanad for the very first time, for they did not wish the Mahout to return the Portuguese. As locals say, his spirit inhabits the tree.
